It May Be Normal, But It's Not Natural
Bloated after lunch. Dragging by 3pm. Heartburn you chalk up to "just getting older."
If that sounds familiar, you're in good company. A lot of men live with gut issues for years. Not because they don't care, but because nobody ever told them where to start. Walk down the supplement aisle and you'll find a dozen bottles labeled "for men," each promising everything and explaining nothing.
This guide cuts through the noise. We'll start with the foundation (your plate and your daily habits), look at what the research is exploring about the gut and men's health, and then show you exactly what's inside NSTINCT and the studies behind it.
Your Gut, Explained Simply
Your gut is home to trillions of bacteria, fungi, and other microbes, collectively called your microbiome. Think of it as an ecosystem that helps you digest food, absorb nutrients, and train your immune system.
When that ecosystem is balanced, you tend to feel it: regular digestion, steady energy, fewer "off" days. When it's thrown off by stress, poor sleep, processed food, or antibiotics, you tend to feel that too.
The Foundation, Part 1: Your Plate
The most powerful tool for a healthy gut is what you eat. Your gut bacteria eat what you eat, so feed the good ones.
- Fiber is fuel. Vegetables, fruit, beans, lentils, whole grains, nuts, and seeds feed beneficial bacteria. In return, those bacteria produce short-chain fatty acids that help keep your gut lining strong.
- Color counts. Different plants feed different microbes. Aim for variety, not perfection.
- Fermented foods add backup. Yogurt, kefir, sauerkraut, kimchi, and miso naturally contain live microbes.
- Cut back on the disruptors. Heavily processed food, added sugar, and artificial sweeteners can throw your gut out of balance.
The Foundation, Part 2: Your Day
Your gut doesn't just respond to food. It responds to how you live.
- Sleep. Short nights disrupt your gut as much as the rest of you.
- Stress. Your gut and brain are in constant conversation. Chronic stress shows up in your digestion.
- Water. Hydration keeps things moving.
- Movement. Long days at a desk slow digestion down. Even short walks help.
None of this is glamorous, but it's the base everything else is built on. No supplement can out-work a poor foundation.
The Gut and Men's Health: What Researchers Are Exploring
Scientists are increasingly looking at how the gut microbiome connects to areas of health that are specific to men. This research is early, and much of it comes from lab and animal studies, but it's worth knowing about.
Prostate health. Researchers have found links between the gut, urinary, and prostate microbiomes and conditions like chronic prostatitis, benign prostatic hyperplasia (BPH), and prostate cancer (Prostate International, 2022). Chronic prostate inflammation is common in adult men and is considered a possible risk factor, which is one reason scientists are studying how gut bacteria influence inflammation throughout the body (review).
Testosterone. In a 2014 study, aging mice given L. reuteri (strain ATCC 6475) in their drinking water kept higher testosterone levels and larger testes than untreated mice. The researchers linked this to reduced inflammation (PLOS One, 2014). This hasn't been confirmed in men yet.
Sperm quality. A small 2017 study of nine men with low sperm motility found that a specific pair of strains (L. rhamnosus CECT8361 and B. longum CECT7347) improved sperm motility within weeks.
Reflux. Chronic acid reflux is more common in men than women, and researchers are exploring the gut's role in digestive comfort more broadly.
The honest takeaway: these findings are promising but specific to the strains studied, and most need larger human trials. NSTINCT's strains have not been studied for prostate health, testosterone, or fertility, so we won't claim they do anything there. What we can do is show you the research behind the strains we actually use.
Probiotics: Strain-Specific, Not Gender-Specific
Probiotics are live microbes that, taken in the right amounts, can support your health. But here's what most "for men" labels won't tell you: the benefits depend on the exact strain, not the gender on the bottle.
A probiotic is identified by three names: genus, species, and strain. Bifidobacterium lactis Bl-04 and Bifidobacterium lactis HN019 are the same species, but they were studied for different things. That's why a label that lists only "Lactobacillus blend" tells you almost nothing.
When you shop for a probiotic, look for:
- Full strain names on the label, so you can look up the research yourself.
- Clinical research on those specific strains, ideally in humans.
- A delivery system that gets live bacteria past stomach acid and through your digestive tract.
Inside NSTINCT: The Strains and the Science
NSTINCT Broad Spectrum Daily Probiotic contains 30 strains and 40 billion AFU per capsule, every one listed on our Label. Here are three with strong human research behind them.
|
Strain |
Per capsule |
Who was studied |
What the research found |
|---|---|---|---|
|
B. lactis Bl-04 |
4.65 billion |
465 physically active adults, 241 of them men |
27% lower risk of upper respiratory illness over 5 months vs. placebo (Clinical Nutrition, 2014) |
|
B. lactis HN019 |
2.0 billion |
100 adults with mild digestive symptoms |
Whole gut transit time cut by up to 33%, with fewer digestive symptoms (Scand. J. Gastroenterology, 2011) |
|
L. rhamnosus GG |
2.25 billion |
141 marathon runners, mostly men |
Shorter digestive symptom episodes after the race (IJSNEM, 2007) |
Bl-04, for the guy who can't afford sick days. The Bl-04 trial is one of the few probiotic studies where more than half the participants were men. Over five months, the Bl-04 group stayed cold-free about three weeks longer on average than the placebo group. The study dose was 2 billion per day; NSTINCT contains 4.65 billion.
HN019, for the guy who's always a little backed up. Slow digestion is behind a lot of that heavy, bloated feeling. In clinical research, HN019 sped up how quickly food moves through the gut, and the effect grew with dose. The study tested 1 billion and 10 billion per day; NSTINCT contains 2 billion. Happy men poop more.
LGG, one of the most studied strains in the world. In marathon runners, a group that was mostly men, LGG didn't change how often digestive issues happened, but it shortened them after the race. Note that the study used a higher dose than NSTINCT contains.
Getting them where they need to go. Strains only help if they survive the trip. NSTINCT uses the MAKTrek® seaweed matrix to protect live bacteria and carry them across your entire digestive tract, instead of releasing them all in one spot.
Your Game Plan
- Add one more plant to every meal. A handful of spinach, a side of beans, berries with breakfast.
- Try one fermented food this week. Yogurt, kefir, sauerkraut, or kimchi.
- Drink more water and move every hour. Set a reminder to stand up from your desk.
- Protect your sleep and manage stress. Pick one thing: an earlier bedtime, a walk after dinner, ten minutes off your phone.
- Back it up with a probiotic that tells you what's inside. NSTINCT has 30 fully listed strains, 40 billion AFU, and a delivery system built to reach your whole gut. Shop NSTINCT.
Your gut runs your digestion, your immune defenses, and a lot of how you feel day to day. Give it a real foundation, then give it backup.
